On behalf of Yildiz Technical University, which does its best to catch up with the latest technological developments around the world, The Basic English Department is now engaged in a research about distance learning, and specifically the web-based learning environment and its students' achievement across learning styles.
We are doing this research because we are looking for better ways to improve our students' intellectual development. We believe that the use of technology is one of the best ways to improve academic achievement. Research findings show that if the needs of the students are disregarded, they are most likely to fail, and the use of technology in many cases can help the students do better.
With this web site we also aim to help our students find out their learning styles, which is the most important part of our research. It is for sure that if our students can learn "what kind of a learner they are" or "how they can learn better", they can be more successful. To determine these, we will be working with Peter Honey, a scholar and an expert of learning styles in the United States, whose team will find out our students' learning styles.
Web-based courses are currently the most credited and the most common learning environments in higher education around the world - especially in the United States. Therefore, we believe that this type of courses in our university will carry us to a next level in our educational quality. This site will serve as an example for our future curriculum in Basic English Department and hopefully help our students to be effective learners throughout their lives.
